Last Sunday, Mondello Park came alive once again to the sound of screaming SR20’s, 2JZ’s and plenty more engine notes as Ireland’s only International racing circuit played host to Judgement Day, the final round of the 2017 MicksGarage.com Irish Amateur Drift Championship.
With 5 drivers all still mathematically in with a chance of winning the title and over 20 drivers still in the running to earn themselves one of 10 much sought-after IDC Pro-Am class licenses at the start of the day, the importance of last Sunday’s event would have many drivers biting their nails in the days leading up to the finale.
This time around 55 drivers would compete for the top prize on the day and with some of the drivers not making it to Round 4 currently sitting in the top 10 in the standings, things were blown wide open for others to make the jump into the prize spots.
Come qualifying, Joseph Roberts – who was currently sitting inside that Top 5 and was still in contention for the championship title – showed his intentions by shooting right to the top of qualifying after putting in a score of 83.67. He managed to put on enough of a show to overcome Jordan Boyce in second at 78.33 and Tommy O’Neill in third with a score of 78.17.
